About the view

Copper Canyon Rim Overlook

A woman stands at the rim of Copper Canyon, her back to us, facing a world that drops away in great sweeping folds of deep green and shadow. She is dressed in a full magenta skirt layered over bright fabric, an orange blouse, and a violet head covering, her long braid resting at her back — a figure of vivid warmth against the cool blue distance. The canyon unfolds below her in ridge after ridge of forested slopes, fading from rich jade in the foreground to soft teal and grey-blue where the gorges deepen toward the horizon. Broad clouds drift through an open sky above, and low broad-leafed plants flank her at the rocky edge. The light feels midday and luminous, pouring evenly across the scene and pulling every color to its fullest.

The history & when to go

The Tarahumara — who call themselves Rarámuri, meaning those who run fast — have inhabited the canyon country of Chihuahua for centuries. They are widely known for their tradition of long-distance running across extraordinarily rugged terrain, and many Rarámuri women continue to wear the distinctive layered skirts and bright blouses seen in this scene. The region became more accessible to outside visitors after the Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacífico, a dramatic rail line through the Sierra Madre Occidental, was completed in 1961.

The dry season between November and March brings the clearest skies and the most dramatic canyon visibility from the rim overlooks.

From the canyon rim, a vast cathedral of green sierra drops away into blue haze, rimmed by prickly pear and open sky. This watercolor study of Copper Canyon captures the warm ochre light and deep teal shadows of Mexico's greatest natural wonder in quietly breathtaking color.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Copper Canyon finds a home on your wall.
