About the view

Cesky Krumlov Castle Winter

The view sweeps down from a high vantage point at dusk, the whole of Cesky Krumlov Castle rising against a deep cobalt sky streaked with the last pale wash of cloud. Snow lies thick and unbroken across every rooftop, softening the angular forms of towers and wings into gentle rounded shapes. Warm amber light spills from windows and lanterns below, its reflection shimmering in the dark ribbon of the Vltava as it bends through the town. The castle's tall round tower anchors the composition at center, glowing ochre against the cold blue, while a white-faced church tower stands sentinel to the right. Snow-dusted bare branches and the low rooflines of the old town fill the foreground, pulling the eye upward toward that illuminated mass of warm stone.

The history & when to go

Český Krumlov Castle is one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe, with origins stretching back to the thirteenth century. Over the following centuries it passed through the hands of several powerful Bohemian and Austrian noble families, each leaving architectural layers from Gothic through Renaissance and Baroque. The castle and historic town were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 in recognition of their exceptional state of preservation.

December and January offer the most dramatic version of this scene, when early nightfall deepens the blue twilight quickly and fresh snowfall can transform the town within hours.
