About the view

Cesky Krumlov Baroque Garden

The view opens from ground level along the garden's central axis, looking up through the Baroque Garden at Cesky Krumlov toward a tiered cascade of warm stone steps and a circular reflecting pool. Pale figures line the broad balustrades on either side, caught mid-gesture in the bright midday sun. In the foreground, sweeping parterre beds curl in arcs of deep red, soft pink, and cream — colors vivid against the clipped green geometry of low hedges and closely trimmed columns of dark foliage. A wall of tall, full-canopied trees rises behind the cascade, their amber and olive greens deepening toward the edges of the composition, while a brilliant blue sky with loose white clouds opens above it all. The overall feel is of symmetry bathed in summer light, every element pulling the eye gently upward toward the cascade's golden tiers.

The history & when to go

The Baroque Garden was laid out in the second half of the seventeenth century as part of the castle complex that dominates the town. It reflects the formal garden traditions that swept across European aristocratic estates during the Baroque period, with its emphasis on axial symmetry, sculpted plantings, and decorative statuary. The garden and castle together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for their exceptional state of preservation and the way they illustrate the culture of Central European nobility across several centuries.

Summer is the finest time to visit, when the parterre beds are in full bloom and the long afternoon light stretches shadows across the lawns well into the evening.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Cesky Krumlov finds a home on your wall.
