About the view

Cesky Krumlov Castle Tower

From a high vantage point above the bend in the river, the slender tower of Cesky Krumlov Castle rises above everything — its dark spire and pale green cupola piercing a sky of rolling summer clouds. The view sweeps across an extraordinary loop of river, its calm grey-green water doubling back on itself to cradle a tight peninsula packed with warm-toned rooftops in every shade of terracotta and rust. Lush tree canopy pushes in from the hills behind, framing the castle's broad amber facade and the jumble of gabled buildings clustered at its feet. The light feels generous and mid-afternoon, casting soft shadows between the rooflines and catching the river's surface in quiet silver.

The history & when to go

Cesky Krumlov Castle is one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe. Its origins reach back to the thirteenth century, and over the following centuries it passed through the hands of several powerful Bohemian noble families, each leaving their mark on its courtyards, towers and interiors. The distinctive round tower — rendered in decorative sgraffito and topped with its recognizable cupola — became the defining silhouette of the town. The castle and its historic center were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.

Late spring and early summer bring the fullest green to the surrounding hills, making the contrast between the foliage and the warm rooftops especially vivid from this elevated perspective.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Cesky Krumlov finds a home on your wall.
