Cape Breton Coastal Cliffs Sunset
A crimson Adirondack chair sits alone on a sweep of wind-combed grass at the edge of Cape Breton's coastal cliffs, facing a sunset that fills the right half of the sky with amber, peach, and soft gold. The sun hovers just above the waterline, casting long warm ribbons across a darkening sea where white surf traces the base of the headlands. To the left, layers of highland ridge recede into blue-green shadow and low drifting mist, their silhouettes deepening as the light pulls away. The chair anchors the whole composition — a single bold note of red against the rolling green slope — and gives the viewer a place to stand, or to imagine standing, as the day fades quietly into the Atlantic.
The history & when to go
The Cape Breton Highlands are among the oldest upland landscapes in North America, shaped over hundreds of millions of years by erosion and the slow work of glaciers. The dramatic coastal cliffs along the island's western and northern edges drop steeply to the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and this rugged shoreline has defined the lives of Mi'kmaq peoples and later settlers for centuries. The Cabot Trail, which winds along much of this coastline, is widely regarded as one of the most scenic drives in the world.
Sunset along the western cliffs burns brightest from late summer through October, when the air is cleaner and the low-angled light lingers longest over the water.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.
I hope a little piece of Cape Breton Island finds a home on your wall.
