About the view

Beulach Ban Falls Cape Breton

A single curtain of white water drops through a narrow canyon at Beulach Ban Falls, pouring straight down between tall walls of rough, layered rock into a wide, turquoise pool that opens toward the sea. The scene is bathed in the rose-gold warmth of a late-day sky, soft peach and blush spreading across the upper canvas where loose clouds catch the fading light. Dense, dark evergreens crowd the ridgeline on both sides, their silhouettes pressing close around the falls and deepening the sense of enclosure. The mist at the base dissolves into the pale reflection on the water below, and gentle surf rolls in from the foreground, its white foam streaking the teal surface. The composition pulls the eye straight to the falls, framed perfectly by cliff and forest.

The history & when to go

Beulach Ban Falls is one of the most dramatic waterfalls in Cape Breton Highlands National Park, which was established in 1936 and remains one of Canada's most celebrated national parks. The falls drop along the Aspy River watershed in the northern highlands, a region shaped over vast stretches of geological time by the same forces that built the Appalachian range. The surrounding boreal forest and exposed canyon cliffs are protected within the park's boundaries, keeping this corridor of wilderness largely intact.

The falls are most vivid after spring snowmelt or following heavy autumn rain, when the volume of water is at its greatest and the surrounding foliage adds rich color to the canyon walls.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Cape Breton Island finds a home on your wall.
