About the view

Colorful Canal Waterfront

The view stretches along a calm inner canal, seen from a low waterside promenade where clusters of vivid pink and white blooms spill over the warm stone edging in the foreground. Across the still, turquoise-green water, a row of closely packed buildings rises in a jubilant procession of coral, lemon yellow, mint green, lilac, and burnt orange, their facades mirrored so cleanly in the canal below that the reflection reads almost as a second city. Small boats sit quietly at their moorings, and a gentle arched bridge crosses the water in the middle distance. Behind everything, a densely wooded hillside sweeps upward, its deep green a cool counterweight to all that vivid color. The sky above is a bright midday blue, broken by full, luminous clouds that add light and movement to the whole scene.

The history & when to go

Busan's colorful canal waterfront began as a working fishing port, where small boats sheltered along the water's edge and laver production once drove the local economy. The area was transformed with a bold, colorful makeover that drew visitors and gave this district a character entirely its own. Today the canals are celebrated as one of the most photographed corners of the city, a living expression of community and creativity along the South Korean coast.

Visitors stroll the promenades and take in the reflections of the colorful buildings in the calm port waters.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Busan finds a home on your wall.
