About the view

Lyabi-Hauz Pond Bukhara

The scene opens across the still, jade-green waters of Lyabi-Hauz, looking toward the warm-toned facade of a grand arched portal that anchors the far bank in Bukhara. The great iwan rises in muted rose and amber above a long horizontal wall, its tall pointed arch framing deep shadow within. Lush canopy trees crowd either side, their vivid greens bleeding softly into the water's reflection below. A pale, bare-branched tree leans in from the left, its sculptural silhouette catching the bright midday light. At the center of the pond, a small ornamental structure with turquoise domes sits just above the waterline, doubling perfectly in the glassy surface. The sky above is an open, hazy blue streaked with thin cloud, and the whole composition hums with that particular warmth of a Central Asian afternoon held still.

The history & when to go

Lyabi-Hauz is one of the few historic reflecting pools in Bukhara to have survived into the present day; most of the city's old pools were filled in during the Soviet era. The ensemble around it dates to the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries and includes a khanaka and two madrassas, all built under the patronage of a powerful vizier of the Ashtarkhanid-era court. The site has been recognized as part of the historic center of Bukhara, a UNESCO World Heritage designation the city holds.

Late spring and early autumn bring the clearest light and the most comfortable temperatures, making the golden late-afternoon hours at the pond especially rewarding.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Bukhara finds a home on your wall.
