About the view

Chor Minor Madrassa Bukhara

Four slender towers rise against a sky so deeply blue it almost hums, their teal-capped domes catching the midday light like four bright flames held aloft. The view looks straight toward the entrance of Chor Minor in Bukhara, framed on the left by the lush, sunlit canopy of a broad leafy tree whose green presses vivid and cool against the warm amber of the façade. The portal arch, detailed with soft rose and pale blue tilework, draws the eye inward while low clipped shrubs border the courtyard in quiet symmetry. Every tone here is saturated and clear — honeyed walls, cobalt domes, the white blaze of a Central Asian noon.

The history & when to go

Chor Minor, whose name simply means Four Minarets, was built in the early nineteenth century and is one of Bukhara's most distinctive structures. Unlike the grand congregational complexes elsewhere in the city, it served as a madrassa — a place of Islamic study — commissioned by a wealthy merchant. Each of its four towers is topped with a distinctive turquoise dome, and delicate tilework panels decorate the upper sections, giving the building an intimate, almost whimsical character quite unlike the monumental scale of Bukhara's better-known ensembles.

Late spring and early autumn bring reliably clear skies and the soft green foliage that makes the towers glow warmest against the blue above.
