About the view

Passeig de Gracia Modernist Buildings

Seen from street level on Passeig de Gracia, this canvas captures two of Barcelona's most extraordinary facades side by side in bright midday light. On the right, Casa Batlló commands the composition: its rippling front shimmers with fragments of lavender, mint and pale gold, the surface undulating like something alive. Above it, a scaled roof arcs in iridescent blues and greens, topped by a slender tower crowned with a four-armed cross. To the left, a neighboring building rises in warm honey tones, its stepped upper edge decorated in a repeated diamond pattern trimmed with deep coral. Between them, the canopy of lush green trees pushes upward, softening the geometry. The sky behind it all is a clean, cloudless blue that makes every color below it sing.

The history & when to go

Casa Batlló was designed by Antoni Gaudí and completed in 1906, a remodeling of an existing building commissioned by the industrialist Josep Batlló. It sits alongside other celebrated Modernista buildings on a stretch of Passeig de Gracia sometimes called the Block of Discord, where rival architects of the era each left a landmark within steps of one another. Casa Batlló was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Works of Antoni Gaudí.

The facade glows most vividly on a clear morning, when direct sunlight hits the iridescent tiles and the colors shift with every step you take.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Barcelona finds a home on your wall.
