About the view

Palau Nacional Montjuic Fountains

The view looks straight up the grand axis of Montjuic, with the Palau Nacional filling the upper half of the composition in deep amber and burnished gold. Cascading water rushes down tiered levels in the foreground, the jets catching the bright afternoon light and breaking into cool blue and white arcs against the warm stone of the terraces. Dense green hedging flanks the pools in precise geometric shapes, drawing the eye upward through layer after layer toward the palace's central dome and its flanking towers. A wide, luminous sky — the particular cerulean blue of a clear Mediterranean afternoon — stretches behind billowing white clouds, giving the building a quality that hovers somewhere between solid and radiant.

The history & when to go

The Palau Nacional was built for the 1929 International Exposition and sits at the summit of the Montjuïc approach, overlooking the city and the long ceremonial avenue below. After the exposition it was repurposed as a museum and today houses the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, one of the most important collections of Romanesque art in the world. The cascading water feature in front of it, known as the Font Màgica, was also created for the 1929 exposition.

Spring and early autumn bring the softest light to this hillside, when the afternoon sun catches those golden domes without the full glare of summer.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Barcelona finds a home on your wall.
