About the view

Hillside Basilica Sunset Barcelona

Seen from across a low reflecting pool, the Sagrada Família rises out of the Barcelona dusk in a blaze of amber and copper. Tall palms frame both edges of the composition, their dark silhouettes pressing in against warm stone that seems almost to glow from within. The sky above is the real drama — sweeping bands of rose, lavender and soft gold fan outward from behind the spires, which taper to their distinctive finials against the last light of evening. The view is slightly low, giving the clustered towers a soaring quality, their organic, branching forms dissolving upward into the luminous dusk.

The history

Construction on the Sagrada Família began in 1882, and the visionary architect Antoni Gaudí took over the project the following year, dedicating the rest of his life to it. Gaudí envisioned a structure unlike any built before, with facades devoted to the Nativity, the Passion, and the Glory, and an interior designed to evoke a forest of stone. He died in 1926 with the basilica far from complete; work has continued across successive generations of architects, guided by his plans and models. The basilica was consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Barcelona finds a home on your wall.
