About the view

Lake Bacalar Seven Colors

Seen from high above, Lake Bacalar unfolds across the canvas like a ribbon of living color stretching toward the horizon. Long, sweeping bands of turquoise and aquamarine run the length of the lake, deepening toward violet in the stillest pockets and flaring gold and white where the low sun catches the shallows along the left edge. The perspective looks south along the water, with dense jungle canopy crowding the eastern shore in deep greens and amber, and at least one dark, perfectly round cenote visible tucked into the trees below. The sky at the upper left burns with the warm rays of a sun just at the rim of the world, casting soft peach and lilac across the clouds and sending long reflections skimming across the water's surface.

The history & when to go

Lake Bacalar is the second-largest lake in Mexico and has been a valued freshwater source in the Yucatán Peninsula for centuries. The Maya settled along its shores long before European contact, and a Spanish fort was built at the town's edge in the eighteenth century to defend against pirate raids. The lake's extraordinary color variation is caused by differences in depth, the pale sandy lakebed, and the clarity of the freshwater itself.

The aerial glow captured here is truest in the dry season, roughly November through April, when skies stay clear and the colors read at their most vivid in the long light of late afternoon.

Bacalar Serenity in Every Glance – Lake Bacalar Seven Colors Bacalar · Gallery Canvas

Seven shimmering bands of turquoise and sapphire stretch along the shores of Bacalar, where shallow sandbars dissolve into impossible depths of color. This watercolor study of Lake Bacalar captures that luminous gradient from teal to midnight blue beneath a soft pastel sunset sky.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Bacalar finds a home on your wall.
