About the view

Bacalar Lagoon Canal

The view draws you straight down the heart of Bacalar Lagoon, along a narrow canal corridor where the water shifts from pale aquamarine at the edges to a deeper, glassy teal at the center. Tall palms lean in from the left, their fronds catching warm golden light and flushing amber at the tips, while dense green canopy lines the opposite bank in long, soft strokes of emerald and jade. The perspective feels low and close to the water's surface, as though you are drifting through rather than looking in. A soft blush horizon opens at the far end of the channel, where the canal widens and the sky meets the lagoon in a wash of pale rose and white. The whole composition breathes with tropical warmth and extraordinary stillness.

The history & when to go

Bacalar Lagoon is a long, freshwater lake in the state of Quintana Roo, stretching roughly forty-two kilometers along the southern Yucatán Peninsula. Its famous spectrum of colors is produced by variations in water depth and the composition of the lakebed, and the lagoon is fed largely by underground cenote systems. The Spanish built a fort here in the eighteenth century to protect the region from pirates and rival colonial forces, and the town grew slowly around it for centuries.

Early morning is when the canal glows most intensely, the low sun igniting the palms while the water holds its deepest, most vivid blues.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Bacalar finds a home on your wall.
