About the view

Bacalar Lagoon Palapa Dock

A warm-toned dock stretches from the foreground into the heart of Bacalar Lagoon, its rich reddish planks cutting a confident diagonal line toward a thatched palapa perched over the water. A hammock hangs in the shelter's shade, swaying in implied stillness. The view feels low and close to the surface, as though you are stepping onto the dock yourself. The water beneath is almost impossible in its clarity — layers of turquoise shifting to deeper green where the lush canopy of the far shore casts its reflection. The sky is bright midday blue with loose, drifting clouds, and the whole scene hums with saturated tropical light. Deep greens, burnt orange, and that signature aquamarine pull against each other in a composition that is restless and peaceful at the same time.

The history & when to go

Bacalar Lagoon sits in the state of Quintana Roo in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula and stretches roughly 42 kilometers in length. The lagoon's extraordinary color range comes from variations in depth and the presence of stromatolites, among the oldest living organisms on Earth, which thrive in its waters. The town of Bacalar itself has a long history, serving as an important settlement during the Maya period and later as a Spanish colonial outpost. Fort San Felipe, built in the eighteenth century, still stands near the water's edge as a reminder of those layered centuries.

The lagoon's colors are richest and the light most dramatic in the late morning, before midday haze softens the contrast between sky and water.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Bacalar finds a home on your wall.
