About the view

Acatenango Volcano Summit Eruption

The view looks across an open sky from high on the slopes of Acatenango, where a perfectly symmetrical cone rises above a rolling sea of white cloud. A thin column of smoke lifts from the summit of Fuego — the neighboring volcano — curling upward into billows of ash-grey and cream before dissolving into a brilliant, unbroken blue. Deep shadow falls across the left face of the cone while the right flank glows in cool green, dense with forest that fades into the cloud layer below. Feathery branches frame the upper-right corner, and the whole composition pulls the eye from that churning plume down through the clouds to the ridge in the foreground, giving a powerful sense of altitude and open air.

The history & when to go

Fuego is one of the most continuously active volcanoes in Central America, and the view from Acatenango's upper slopes is one of the few places on earth where a person can stand at eye level with an erupting summit. Fuego has been in near-constant eruption in various forms for decades, and major activity has been recorded going back centuries in colonial-era accounts. The two volcanoes share a highland massif that has long held deep significance for the Indigenous Kaqchikel and K'iche' Maya peoples of the surrounding region.

The clearest conditions and the most dramatic contrast between the ash plume and the sky tend to come during the dry season, roughly November through April, when morning light catches the smoke early and the cloud sea below settles at its most photogenic.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Acatenango finds a home on your wall.
