About the view

Acatenango Volcano Erupting

Seen from the dark shoulder of a neighboring peak, Volcan de Fuego tears open the night sky over Acatenango in a cascade of molten orange and deep crimson. A river of glowing material traces a sharp line down the cone's flank, and above the summit a fountain of fire fans outward against a deep cobalt blue that fades almost to midnight at the edges. Plumes of smoke billow and curl to the left, catching the eruption's glow in shades of burnt amber and rose, while the lower slopes dissolve into near-total darkness — their silhouette clean and triangular, anchoring all that fury to the earth below.

The history & when to go

Volcan de Fuego, whose name simply means Volcano of Fire, is one of the most continuously active volcanoes in the world. It has been erupting on and off for centuries, with major eruptive cycles documented since the Spanish colonial period. A catastrophic eruption in 2018 brought the volcano to international attention, causing widespread destruction in surrounding communities. The classic vantage point for witnessing Fuego's nighttime displays is the base camp on Acatenango itself, where trekkers settle in to watch the light show unfold across the ridge.

The dry season, roughly November through April, offers the clearest skies and the most dramatic views of Fuego's glow against an uninterrupted canopy of stars.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Acatenango finds a home on your wall.
