Mist clings to the high tea terraces at dawn while the southern coast breaks open into wide bays fringed with leaning palms, and somewhere between the two the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya rises from the jungle like something dreamed. The island holds an extraordinary density of colour — ochre earth, indigo ocean, saffron robes — all of it softened by air thick with humidity and spice.
