About the view

Nallur Kandaswamy Temple

The scene is frontal and perfectly still, as though the viewer is standing at the far end of the open courtyard just as the last colour drains from the sky. The Nallur Kandaswamy Temple rises dead centre, its tiered tower dense with carved figures that catch the amber flood of evening lights and glow like warm honey against a deepening blue. A long, low colonnade stretches left and right in cool shadow, punctuated by evenly spaced lamp finials that flicker gold along the temple wall. Tall palms frame each edge of the composition, their dark fronds feathering into the dusk. The foreground is a sweep of pale sandy earth, uncluttered, drawing the eye straight to the entrance passage where a corridor of light tunnels inward toward something you almost feel rather than see.

The history & when to go

Nallur Kandaswamy is one of the most sacred Hindu temples in Sri Lanka, dedicated to the deity Murugan and holding a central place in the religious life of the Tamil community. The temple complex has been rebuilt and restored across many centuries following periods of destruction, with the current structure taking much of its present form during the eighteenth century. Each year it hosts a major festival lasting several weeks, drawing hundreds of thousands of devotees from Sri Lanka and across the Tamil diaspora worldwide.

The festival season, which falls in the Tamil month of Aadi roughly corresponding to August and September, is when the temple blazes most brilliantly and the air around Nallur feels charged with collective devotion.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Jaffna finds a home on your wall.
