About the view

Old Faithful Geyser Eruption

The view looks out across the wide, flat basin just as Old Faithful reaches full eruption, the column of steam and water surging upward and billowing into a rose-tinted cloud that catches the last warmth of a sunset sky. The horizon glows in pale peach and gold, deepening to soft coral where the plume catches the light, while the foreground spreads in cool silver-blue — rushing mist and pooled water reflecting the fading day. A fringe of dark evergreens runs along the middle distance, and the gentle ridgeline behind them fades to dusty blue. The composition is wide and unhurried, placing Old Faithful at Yellowstone right of center so that the open sky can hold the full drama of the eruption's height.

The history & when to go

Old Faithful has been erupting for as long as records exist, and it earned its name in 1870 when members of the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition noted the regularity of its intervals. It became one of the central landmarks when Yellowstone was established as the United States' first national park in 1872. The geyser erupts multiple times each day, sending water high into the air, and its predictable rhythm made it a symbol of the park itself — a rare natural spectacle that rewards patience with something genuinely extraordinary.

The pink-tinted sky in this scene is most vivid in late summer and early autumn, when the air is clear and sunset lingers long over the basin.
