About the view

Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces

Tier upon tier of warm, sculpted ledges cascade down the hillside at Mammoth Hot Springs, caught here in the kind of low, golden light that makes every ridge glow amber and burnt sienna. The composition pulls the eye upward and to the right, where the terraces stack in broad, rounded shelves of deep rust, honey, and chalky cream. Pools of pale blue-grey water collect along the lower levels, mirror-still and cool against the surrounding warmth. To the left, a cluster of bare, silver-white trunks rises from the shallows, their bleached forms softening into haze. Distant hills fade to lavender beneath a clear, pale sky, giving the whole scene a quiet, open breath.

The history

Mammoth Hot Springs has been a landmark of Yellowstone since the park was established in 1872 as the first national park in the United States. The terraces are formed by geothermally heated water rising through the earth and depositing minerals as it cools at the surface, a process that is constantly and visibly reshaping the landscape. Because the flow of water shifts over time, the terraces are never quite the same from one year to the next, making them one of the most dynamic features in the park.

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Yellowstone National Park finds a home on your wall.
