About the view

Ancient Windtower Skyline

Three tall windcatchers rise against a dusky sky, their warm-toned shafts glowing amber and deep terracotta in the last light of the day. The view looks out across the rooftops of Yazd from an elevated vantage point, the flat-topped forms of the old city spreading in every direction toward a distant horizon where slender minarets needle upward through a haze of rose and blue. Long shadows pool between the towers and the surrounding walls, deepening the richness of the earth tones while the upper sky fades from soft coral into cool periwinkle. The composition is anchored by the three towers in the foreground — commanding, geometric, quietly monumental.

The history & when to go

Windcatchers, known in Persian as badgirs, are one of the great achievements of traditional Persian engineering. The city's historic center was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017, recognized in part for this remarkable collection of surviving structures. For centuries these towers have drawn prevailing winds down into the rooms and courtyards below, providing natural ventilation without any mechanical assistance — a system so effective that it has endured largely unchanged across hundreds of years of continuous use.

The golden hour before sunset, when low light saturates every warm surface and the sky deepens dramatically behind the towers, is the ideal time to take in this view for yourself.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Yazd finds a home on your wall.
