About the view

Victoria Inner Harbour Marina

The view opens at twilight, looking across Victoria Inner Harbour Marina from the waterfront edge, where floating docks angle outward into still water. Dozens of sailboat masts rise in pale clusters against a sky that has gone electric — deep violet at the horizon, then flushing upward through rose and magenta in long, wind-swept streaks. Warm amber light glows along the dock rails and spills in wavering columns across the purple-blue water below. To the left, a domed civic building sits in dark silhouette against the brightening sky, its outline familiar and steady. To the right, a colonnaded structure catches the last of the evening glow. The whole composition pulls the eye from the near dock in the foreground out toward the open harbour, then up into that extraordinary sky.

The history & when to go

The Inner Harbour has served as Victoria's working and ceremonial waterfront since the mid-nineteenth century, when the city grew around the Hudson's Bay Company's Fort Victoria. The marina today sits at the center of the harbour, framed by the British Columbia Parliament Buildings to one side and the landmark Fairmont Empress hotel to the other — two structures completed around the turn of the twentieth century that together defined the harbour's enduring character.

Midsummer evenings bring the longest twilight and the most dramatic colour to the sky above the harbour, making late June and July the finest season to witness a scene this vivid in person.
