About the view

Valparaíso Painted Staircase Alley

The view pulls you straight into the heart of Valparaíso, looking up a narrow staircase alley as it rises steeply toward a warm terracotta building framed against a pale sky. The steps themselves are a riot of horizontal stripes — deep green, burnt orange, vivid purple, sunny yellow — each riser a different hue, so the climb reads almost like a keyboard played in color. Murals crowd both walls, swirling and blooming in blues, pinks, reds and greens, their fluid shapes pressing inward to form a tunnel of pure energy. A slender railing runs along the right side, catching the light as midday sun cuts down the alley and throws sharp shadows across each tread. The perspective narrows as it ascends, drawing the eye upward in a way that feels both intimate and boundless.

The history & when to go

Valparaíso's cerros, the hillside neighborhoods that ring the port, have been a canvas for community muralists since at least the 1990s, a movement that grew partly from local activism and partly from the city's long tradition of popular art. UNESCO recognized Valparaíso's historic quarter as a World Heritage Site in 2003. Staircase alleys like this one are woven into the urban fabric that makes the city's public spaces so distinctive, functioning as both thoroughfares and collective expression.

The alley is liveliest and most sharply lit on clear summer mornings between December and February, when the southern sun strikes the steps at an angle that makes every stripe of color glow.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Valparaíso finds a home on your wall.
