About the view

Tokyo Tower Night Street

Tokyo Tower blazes in red and white against a deep cobalt sky, its lit frame rising from the dead center of the composition. The view looks straight down a wide urban boulevard in Tokyo, with low buildings on either side glowing amber and neon, their warmth reflected in the darkened road below. Long streaks of red and white — the trails of passing traffic — sweep along both lanes in fluid arcs, giving the scene a sense of forward motion. The tower shifts from a rich coral at its base to a cooler white near the tip, perfectly centered and impossible to ignore.

The history & when to go

Tokyo Tower opened in 1958, built primarily to serve as a broadcasting antenna as Japan modernized after the war. Inspired in form by the Eiffel Tower yet taller than its Parisian counterpart, it quickly became one of the most recognized landmarks in the country. Its nightly illumination, which changes with the seasons, has made it as much a symbol of Tokyo's energy as of its postwar ambition.

Winter evenings offer the clearest version of this view, when dry air and a deep blue dusk make the tower's lights burn their brightest.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Tokyo finds a home on your wall.
