About the view

Chidorigafuchi Cherry Blossom Moat

Seen from the water's edge, Chidorigafuchi unfolds as a soft corridor of pink and lilac, the blossoms so dense they bend low over both banks and nearly graze the surface below. Small rowboats drift along the moat in Tokyo, their dark silhouettes quiet against the pale blue-green water, which mirrors the warm flush of petals overhead. The palette shifts from deep rose on the right bank to a cooler lavender on the left, the two tones meeting in the middle distance where the waterway narrows and a slender red tower rises between steel-blue towers and a cream-colored sky. Light sits gently across the whole scene — soft, diffuse, neither fully morning nor evening — giving the blossoms an almost luminous quality, as though the color is coming from within the trees rather than from above.

The history & when to go

Chidorigafuchi follows the northwestern edge of the former Edo Castle grounds, a moat that once served a defensive purpose for the seat of Tokugawa shogunal power. The Imperial Palace complex, which occupies the historic castle site, has been the residence of Japan's imperial family since 1868. The moat and its surrounding path are managed as a public green space, making one of the country's most celebrated cherry blossom corridors freely accessible on foot.

The blossoms typically peak in late March to early April, and early morning visits reward with calmer water and the softest, most even light along the banks.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Tokyo finds a home on your wall.
