About the view

Chiostro di San Francesco Sorrento

Warm honey light fills the courtyard of the Chiostro di San Francesco, viewed from beneath a shaded arcade whose interlaced Gothic arches rise in elegant clusters of pale warm stone. Gnarled trees cast dappled shadows across the garden's low trimmed hedges, while rounded arches along the opposite walk catch the full weight of the southern sun. Vivid magenta blooms cascade over the upper walls, a shock of hot color against the bleached white facade, and a slender bell tower punctuates a slice of clear turquoise sky above it all. The palette moves from deep amber and mossy green in the foreground to soft gold and sky blue at the center, drawing the eye gently inward toward the light.

The history & when to go

The cloister adjoins a church dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi and dates to the fourteenth century. Over the centuries it passed through the care of different religious orders, and the architectural detailing reflects a meeting of Gothic and Arabic influences. Today the space serves both as a cultural venue and as a quiet retreat within the town, hosting open-air events during the warmer months while retaining much of its medieval character.

Late morning in early summer brings the most luminous quality of light into the courtyard, when the sun clears the surrounding walls and the blooms are fully open.

This watercolor print of the Chiostro di San Francesco bathes the scene in warm ochre, soft green, and vivid violet against a clear Mediterranean sky.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Sorrento finds a home on your wall.
