About the view

Dragon Blood Tree Pool

The view looks down into a narrow gorge on Socotra Island, where warm amber cliffs rise sharply on either side, their surfaces rippling with deep shadow and burnt sienna light. In the upper left, a single dragon blood tree commands the slope — its flat, mushroom-shaped canopy of dense green hovering above a slender, pale trunk, roots gripping the rocky earth like outstretched fingers. Below and to the right, a small pool of vivid turquoise water catches the light, glowing almost impossibly bright against the surrounding copper and rust tones. Scattered low shrubs in muted olive dot the descent between tree and water, giving the composition a sense of scale and stillness. The palette moves from deep canyon shadow at the top to sun-scorched gold at the center, then resolves into that startling jewel-blue pool — three worlds layered into one frame.

The history & when to go

The dragon blood tree takes its name from the deep red resin it produces, long used in the region as a dye, medicine and varnish. Socotra has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its extraordinary biodiversity, and the dragon blood tree is central to that distinction — a slow-growing species shaped over millennia by the island's harsh winds and dry seasons into its distinctive, shade-giving silhouette.

The best time to visit in person is between October and April, when the monsoon season has passed and the island's trails and plateaus become accessible.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Socotra Island finds a home on your wall.
