Mud-brick tower houses rise six and seven storeys from the desert plateau, their alabaster windows glowing at dusk like lanterns above the oldest continuously inhabited city on earth. Even in hardship the landscape holds an austere, irreplaceable beauty — frankincense on mountain terraces, the silver-green of qat groves, sand cities that seem to have grown organically from the rock itself.
