About the view

Bayon Temple Stone Faces

The view looks upward from ground level, the camera tilted so that the massive warm-stone towers of Bayon Temple fill nearly the entire frame. One great carved face dominates the center — serene, wide-lipped, eyes half-closed in an expression that hovers somewhere between calm and knowing. Around it, more faces emerge from the clustered towers, their features half-lit, half-swallowed by deep shadow. The sky behind them is pure drama: orange and gold flames of cloud sweep across the upper right, fading into a soft violet-blue on the left. Silhouettes of low trees line the bottom edge, dark against the ember glow. The light reads as the last minutes before full dark, that moment when warm stone deepens to burgundy and the sky does its most extravagant work.

The history & when to go

Bayon stands at the heart of Angkor Thom, the walled royal city built by the Khmer king Jayavarman VII in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. Its towers are famous for the large faces carved into each one — most scholars believe they represent either the bodhisattva Avalokitesvara or the king himself, or a merging of the two. At its height, the temple held dozens of these towers, making it one of the most distinctive structures in all of Southeast Asia.

Sunset is the ideal hour to stand here, when the fading light draws those carved faces out of the stone and gives them something close to warmth.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Siem Reap finds a home on your wall.
