About the view

Sidi Bou Said Blue Door Alley

The view looks straight down one of Sidi Bou Said's signature sloping lanes, framed on the left by a grand arched doorway in deep cobalt blue, its warm stone surround catching the full weight of midday sun. A cascade of vivid magenta blossoms spills over the roofline above it, pulling the eye upward before releasing it back down the alley, where more white facades and blue shutters step neatly toward the water. A single tall palm rises near the far end, slender and unhurried, and beyond it the Mediterranean opens up in a wash of brilliant turquoise that meets an almost cloudless sky. The whole composition moves from hot pink through pure white to cool blue, a progression that feels less designed than simply inevitable in this light.

The history

Sidi Bou Said's blue-and-white palette is not accidental. A decree formalised the village's strict colour code in the early twentieth century, preserving the aesthetic that had already attracted artists and intellectuals from across Europe. The village sits within a wider historic area that includes the ancient site of Carthage nearby, and it has been recognised for its cultural significance within Tunisia's national heritage. Its clifftop position above the Gulf of Tunis has made it a landmark for sailors and travellers for centuries.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Sidi Bou Said finds a home on your wall.
