About the view

San Sebastian Old Town Street

The view draws you straight down a narrow Old Town street in San Sebastian, the tall warm-toned facades rising on either side like two golden walls leaning gently toward each other. Wrought-iron lanterns jut from the buildings at eye level, and balconies crowded with trailing greenery and potted flowers add bursts of deep red and soft green against the amber and ochre of the walls. Midday light floods from above, casting long cool shadows across the pale paving stones below and leaving the upper storeys glowing. At the far end of the street, a slender Gothic spire rises above the rooftops, framed by a slip of blue sky, pulling the eye forward through the composition as naturally as the street itself does.

The history & when to go

The Parte Vieja, or Old Quarter, is the historic heart of the city, its tight grid of streets laid out after the neighborhood was almost entirely destroyed by fire in 1813 during the Peninsular War and rebuilt over the following decades, which is why so much of its architecture has a unified, early nineteenth-century character. Today it remains the social and cultural center of Basque life in the city, renowned for its pintxos bars and its deep-rooted local traditions.

Early morning, before the bars open and the crowds gather, is when this particular street feels most like the image — quiet, golden, and entirely yours.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of San Sebastian finds a home on your wall.
