About the view

La Concha Bay Fortress Overlook

From the old fortress walls on Monte Urgull, the full sweep of La Concha Bay opens beneath a soft, pearl-grey sky. A long crescent of sand curves in warm amber along the left edge, and the water shifts from pale jade near shore to cool silver at its center, scattered with small boats in loose clusters. A steep green headland rises from the sea in the middle distance, its summit carrying a faint historic silhouette. In the foreground, a rounded warm-toned sentry tower and ancient walling frame the view, as though the bay has been caught through a gap in the ramparts.

The history & when to go

Monte Urgull has been fortified for centuries, its walls and towers reflecting San Sebastian's long role as a strategic coastal stronghold. The hill changed hands repeatedly during the conflicts that shaped northern Spain, and the fortress complex at its summit bears the marks of those turbulent periods. Today the hill is a public park, and its ramparts remain among the most visited parts of the city, valued for both their history and the sweeping views they offer over the bay.

Early evening in summer brings the most rewarding light, when the sand turns deep copper and the bay glows before dusk.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of San Sebastian finds a home on your wall.
