About the view

Santo Domingo de Guzman Church

The view meets Santo Domingo de Guzman Church straight on, low and level, as though you had paused at the edge of its broad plaza just as dusk settled in. The facade rises in warm rose and dusty coral, its layered carvings and twin bell towers catching uplighting that holds the warm stone against a deepening sky of cerulean and lavender. To the left, a flowering tree spreads dark branches tipped with violet blooms beside a glowing street lamp. Wide steps climb the center of the frame toward the arched doorway, and the plaza tiles below read as soft lilac in the last of the light.

The history & when to go

Santo Domingo de Guzman is one of the most celebrated colonial churches in southern Mexico. Construction began in the sixteenth century under the Dominican order, and the facade is regarded as a fine example of Latin American Baroque style, dense with sculpted relief work accumulated over generations. The adjoining former convent has served various civic purposes over the centuries and today houses a regional cultural center. The church remains an active place of worship and a focal point of community life in San Cristobal de las Casas.

The blue hour arrives quickly at this altitude, so reaching the plaza shortly before sunset lets you watch the uplighting take hold as the sky darkens around it.
