About the view

Trevi Fountain Rome

The view is head-on and close, as though you've stepped to the very edge of the basin just as the morning light crests the rooftops. Warm stone facades glow a soft apricot and cream, the central palace front rising in layers of columns, niches, and sculpted figures that seem to lean forward into the open air. At the heart of the composition, a commanding central figure stands above a tumble of pale rocks, water cascading in pale veils down into a wide pool of extraordinary color — deep teal at the edges, shifting to a cooler aquamarine where the falls churn the surface white. The sky behind the Trevi Fountain is a clear, luminous blue, and the surrounding buildings of Rome press in warmly on either side, framing the scene like a theatrical backdrop.

The history & when to go

Completed in 1762 after roughly three decades of construction, the Trevi Fountain is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome. It was designed by Nicola Salvi and marks the terminal point of one of the ancient aqueducts that supplies the city with fresh water. The central figure represents Oceanus, flanked by allegorical figures and sea horses. The tradition of tossing a coin into the basin to ensure a return to Rome is widely practiced, and the coins collected are donated to charitable causes.

Early morning on a clear day offers the most serene experience in person, when the light strikes the warm stone directly and the water glows at its most vivid.

Cascading water pours over sun-warmed travertine into a vast turquoise basin at the heart of Rome, Neptune presiding over the roar and the silence alike. This watercolor study of the Trevi Fountain captures the warm gold of ancient stone against vivid cerulean sky, bathed in a still and luminous morning calm.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Rome finds a home on your wall.
