About the view

Tropical Island Archipelago

Seen from a high vantage point above the water, this sweeping aerial view captures the scattered island clusters of Raja Ampat spread across a lagoon of almost impossible color. The sea shifts between electric turquoise in the shallows and a deeper, cooler blue where the water pulls away toward the horizon. Each small island rises steeply, its crown dense with rich green canopy, and the largest masses anchor the left and right of the composition while smaller outcroppings dot the center like punctuation. The sky above is a wide, clear blue, streaked with soft pale clouds, and the midday light gives the whole scene a luminous, almost glowing quality.

The history & when to go

Raja Ampat encompasses more than 1,500 small islands, cays, and shoals spread across a vast stretch of the Coral Triangle. The region is recognized as one of the most species-rich marine areas ever recorded, with scientists having documented extraordinary numbers of fish, coral, and invertebrate species within its waters. The islands themselves are part of the Bird's Head Seascape, a priority conservation zone that has been the subject of ongoing marine protection efforts for decades.

The view is most vivid under the strong midday sun of the dry season, which runs roughly from October through April, when the water achieves its most saturated turquoise tones.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Raja Ampat finds a home on your wall.
