About the view

Trullo Olive Grove Path

A dusty red track winds through the heart of a Puglian grove, drawing the eye toward a solitary trullo sitting quietly at the path's curve. Gnarled, ancient trunks lean in from both sides, their canopies catching the warm afternoon light in bursts of gold and amber green. The rich terracotta of the earth dominates the foreground, scored by the gentle ruts of the path, while a pale blue sky opens above the treetops in the far distance. The trullo itself — round, compact, its conical roof tapering to a point — glows in warm stone tones against the deep shadow of the grove behind it, the whole scene held in that low, honeyed light that belongs entirely to the Italian south.

The history & when to go

Trulli are unique to Puglia and are most densely concentrated in and around the Itria Valley. Their distinctive conical roofs are built using a centuries-old dry-stacking technique, with no mortar binding the carefully layered flat stones. The style is thought to have developed during the medieval period, though the structures seen across the region today largely date from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. In 1996, a large cluster of trulli in the town of Alberobello was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The groves glow most intensely in late October and November, when the harvest season fills the countryside with activity and the low autumn sun deepens every shade of red and gold.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Puglia finds a home on your wall.
