About the view

Playa Principal Sunset Beach

The view is from the shoreline looking west, framed by the dark sweep of tall palms whose fronds reach across the upper corners like an open hand. At the center of the canvas, the sun sits just above the horizon at Playa Principal, a luminous white disc dissolving into deep amber and burnt orange that floods the entire sky. Below it, the Pacific catches that same fire in long, rippling streaks of copper and gold. Along the water's edge, small silhouettes of figures wade and wander, unhurried, while a row of thatched shelters lines the left side of the frame in deep shadow. The colors move from near-black at the edges to a blazing core of tangerine and cream, the whole scene held in that suspended moment just before the sun disappears.

The history & when to go

Playa Principal has long served as the social and commercial heart of Puerto Escondido, the bay where local fishermen launch their boats in the early morning and visitors gather by evening. Unlike the exposed surf breaks nearby, its calmer waters have made it a gathering place for the town across generations, and the palapa structures along its shore have become an enduring symbol of the Oaxacan coast's relaxed, community-centered way of life.

The colors seen here are truest between November and March, when dry-season skies stay clear through dusk and the sunset tends to burn longest over the open Pacific horizon.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Puerto Escondido finds a home on your wall.
