About the view

Puerto Escondido Barrel Wave

A single wave fills the frame, seen through a gap between two tall, fleshy green desert plants whose blurred forms frame the view like a natural window. Beyond a strip of warm amber shoreline, the Pacific rises into a perfect barrel — a thick, curling wall of deep teal that catches the light from within, glowing almost translucent at its crest before folding into churning white foam. The horizon holds a flat strip of open ocean in brilliant cerulean, and the whole scene pulses with midday brightness. Puerto Escondido has rarely looked so alive and so still at the same time.

The history & when to go

The wave at the center of this scene is the Zicatela break, one of the most powerful beach breaks on earth. It draws serious surfers from across the world and has hosted major international surf competitions since the 1990s. The sheer volume of water that moves through here — driven by long-fetch Pacific swells with little to slow them before they hit the shallow sandbar — produces the steep, fast tubes that have made Zicatela genuinely famous among the global surfing community. It is not a forgiving wave, and that uncompromising character is a large part of what defines Puerto Escondido's identity.

The barrels are at their most spectacular from late spring through summer, when the southern hemisphere swells arrive with greatest force and consistency.

This watercolor study of the Puerto Escondido barrel wave captures its glassy green curl framed by blurred desert cactus, wild and luminous against a pale horizon.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Puerto Escondido finds a home on your wall.
