About the view

Maya Bay Phi Phi Islands

The view opens from high above, looking down into Maya Bay as though the cliffs themselves have granted you a perch at their crowns. Towering karst formations rise on either side, their steep faces dense with lush green growth and shadowed in deep blue-green where the canopy thickens. Between them, the lagoon glows in impossible shades — electric turquoise near the shallow crescent of white sand, shifting to a deeper cobalt where the bay opens toward the Andaman Sea. A lone longtail boat cuts a clean white wake across the lower half of the composition, its tiny silhouette a reminder of just how vast and wild this place truly is. Hazy islands dissolve into the pale horizon, layering the scene with depth and distance.

The history & when to go

Maya Bay sits within Ko Phi Phi Le and became internationally recognized after appearing in the 2000 film The Beach. The resulting surge in visitors placed significant strain on the bay's coral ecosystem, and Thai authorities closed Maya Bay entirely from 2018 to 2022 to allow the reef and sea life to recover. The reopening introduced strict visitor limits and anchoring restrictions — a rare and widely noted conservation success story in one of Southeast Asia's most beloved destinations.

Early morning visits reward travelers with the softest light and the calmest water, when the bay's colors shift from pale jade to deep turquoise as the sun climbs the cliffs.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Phi Phi Islands finds a home on your wall.
