About the view

Kokusai Street Palm Boulevard

The view stretches straight down Kokusai Street from street level, a long corridor of color pulling the eye toward a bright horizon. Tall palms line both sides of the boulevard, their feathery crowns catching the full force of midday sun and casting cool blue-gray shadows across the wide road below. The orange dividing lines glow against the pale pavement like ribbons of citrus light. On either side, shopfronts crowd the scene in warm golds, reds, and electric blues — signs layered over signs, awnings tucked beneath balconies — all rendered in the fluid, luminous washes that give this watercolor-style canvas its dreamy, sun-drenched quality. The sky above is a vivid cerulean, unbroken except for a few soft curls of cloud near the center.

The history & when to go

Kokusai Street, which translates roughly as International Street, rose from the ruins of postwar Naha in the late 1940s and became a symbol of the city's remarkable recovery. Running about 1.6 kilometers through the heart of Naha, it developed into the commercial and cultural spine of the island, gathering local food vendors, craft sellers, and performance spaces alongside modern shops. It remains Okinawa's most recognized urban thoroughfare and a living expression of the island's resilient, outward-facing character.

The boulevard is most radiant in the morning hours, when the sun angles low from the east and the palms cast long, dramatic shadows down the full length of the street.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Okinawa finds a home on your wall.
