About the view

Mokulua Islands Lanikai Kayakers

Seen from high above the windward coast of Oahu, this view looks out across a shallow, reef-laced bay toward the twin Mokulua Islands rising from the deep blue Pacific. The water below is extraordinary — shifting in bands from pale jade at the edges of submerged formations to a saturated turquoise at the center, so clear the dark shapes of the reef show through like shadows on glass. Three bright yellow kayaks drift across the middle distance, small against the expanse, giving the scene its human scale. The two islands sit symmetrically on the horizon, their rounded, vegetation-covered silhouettes framed by a wide cobalt sky with just a suggestion of cloud trailing off to the left. The light is full and midday-bright, every color pushed to its most vivid.

The history & when to go

The Mokulua Islands are a pair of small islets located just offshore from Lanikai Beach on Oahu's windward side. They are a state-designated seabird sanctuary, protecting nesting populations of wedge-tailed shearwaters and other native species. Kayaking from Lanikai Beach out to the islands is one of the most popular water activities on this stretch of coast, and the crossing covers roughly three-quarters of a mile of open, reef-sheltered water. The islets are managed to balance public access with habitat protection.

Early morning offers the calmest paddling conditions and the softest, most golden light on the water before the trade winds pick up.

Twin volcanic islets rise from an impossible turquoise lagoon off Lanikai, their green crowns mirrored in water so clear coral shadows drift below like smoke. Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Oahu finds a home on your wall.
