About the view

Byodo-In Temple Bridge

The view draws you in along a vermillion bridge that stretches straight toward the Byodo-In Temple, its sweeping rooflines and deep red colonnades perfectly centered at the end of the path. Lush canopies of deep green press in from both sides, framing the scene like cupped hands, while dark, cloud-wrapped ridges rise dramatically behind the structure, their peaks softened by mist and pale sky. The light is diffuse and cool, the kind that follows gentle rain, giving every shade of green an almost luminous intensity and making the warm red of the bridge and temple glow all the more vividly against it.

The history & when to go

The Byodo-In Temple in Oahu is a non-denominational Buddhist temple that opened in 1968 to commemorate the centennial of Japanese immigration to Hawaii. It was modeled after the Byodo-in in Uji, Japan, a temple that dates back to 1052 and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Hawaiian structure, set against the Ko'olau mountain range, houses a large golden Buddha within its main hall.

Morning offers the most serene conditions for this view in person, when mist still clings to the ridgeline and the grounds are at their most tranquil.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Oahu finds a home on your wall.
