About the view

Hon Tre Island Cable Car

The view swings out over open water from somewhere mid-cable, looking back toward Hon Tre Island as two deep-red gondolas glide along their lines against a wide, luminous sky. The teal of the bay below is almost electric, scattered with the white dots of small fishing boats and edged by the green curve of the island's hillside. A bold red lattice tower anchors the left side of the composition, pulling the eye downward before the scene opens up again into the coastal settlement below — a ferris wheel glowing warm amber among the rooftops, and beyond it all, a soft horizon of pale blue cloud and distant hills. The light feels like late afternoon, hazy and golden at the edges, with the water holding its color long after the sky has begun to soften.

The history & when to go

The Hon Tre Island Cable Car connects the Nha Trang mainland to Hon Tre Island and is one of the longest over-water cable car systems in the world. The route carries passengers high above the bay, offering unobstructed views of the surrounding islands and coastline that have made this stretch of south-central Vietnam a draw for travelers for generations. Hon Tre itself is home to Vinpearl, a large resort and entertainment complex that opened in the early 2000s and has since become one of the region's most visited destinations.

The crossing is particularly vivid in the late afternoon, when the low sun turns the bay a deeper shade of turquoise and the island's lights begin to warm against the dusk.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Nha Trang finds a home on your wall.
