Getting Around
Getting around Nha Trang is easiest by motorbike taxi or the Grab app, which is reliable and inexpensive throughout the city. Day trips to the islands are arranged through the many boat tour operators along the harbour, typically departing early morning from Cau Da pier.
⚖️
Cash or Card
Cash remains king for street food, local markets, and smaller guesthouses, so carrying Vietnamese Dong is genuinely necessary for daily life in the city. Larger restaurants, resort hotels, and tourist-facing shops accept card broadly, but a working cash reserve of at least 500,000 to 1,000,000 VND is wise to keep on hand at all times.

Good to Know
Removing shoes before entering temples, pagodas, and many local homes is a firm cultural expectation rather than a suggestion, and bare or covered shoulders are appreciated at religious sites like Long Son Pagoda. Bargaining is common and expected at the night market and smaller vendors, but the tone should always stay light and friendly rather than aggressive.
🏧
ATMs
ATMs are widely available along Tran Phu Boulevard and near the central market, with Vietcombank, BIDV, and Agribank machines generally offering the most reliable service for international cards. Withdrawal fees vary by machine and home bank, but keeping transactions to larger single amounts rather than multiple small withdrawals is an easy way to reduce unnecessary fees.
💳
Currency
The Vietnamese Dong (VND) is the only accepted currency for everyday transactions, and while USD is occasionally accepted at resorts, the exchange rate offered is almost always unfavorable compared to local ATMs or licensed exchange counters. Notes come in denominations ranging from 1,000 to 500,000 VND, and the similarity between some denominations means it is worth slowing down when counting change.
🔌
Plugs
Vietnam uses Type A, B, and C outlets at 220V and 50Hz. A universal travel adapter is recommended as socket types can vary even within the same building.
🛡️
Safety
Nha Trang is generally safe for visitors, but petty theft including bag snatching from motorbikes does occur along the beachfront promenade and in crowded night market areas, so keeping bags on the side away from traffic is simply good habit. Swimming can be hazardous during the rainy season when currents strengthen, and beach flags should always be checked before entering the water.
✈️
Airports
Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR) serves Nha Trang and sits approximately 35 kilometres south of the city centre, with direct connections to major Vietnamese cities and a growing number of regional Southeast Asian routes. The journey from airport to city takes around 40 to 50 minutes by taxi or shuttle bus, and pre-booking a transfer through the hotel is often the smoothest option on arrival.
