About the view

The Breakers Vanderbilt Mansion

The view opens from the lawn, looking up a broad sweep of vivid green toward The Breakers as it rises against a wide Atlantic sky. The mansion's pale warm facade catches full midday light, its colonnaded arches casting soft shadows across the loggia and the broad terrace steps below. A terracotta roofline and a row of tall chimneys punctuate the upper edge of the composition, while loosely rendered clouds drift behind them in shades of white and pale blue. To the right, trees in soft bloom add a blush of color without competing with the architecture. Behind the mansion's left shoulder, the ocean appears as a thin band of deep blue, grounding the whole scene in Newport's coastal identity.

The history & when to go

The Breakers was completed in 1895 as the summer residence of Cornelius Vanderbilt II and designed by the architect Richard Morris Hunt. At 70 rooms, it was the grandest of the Gilded Age cottages, and it stands today as one of the most visited historic houses in the United States. The Preservation Society of Newport County has maintained it since the 1940s, keeping its elaborately decorated interiors largely intact as a record of the extraordinary wealth concentrated in America during the late nineteenth century.

Late spring and early September offer the clearest skies and the most generous light, when the crowds thin just enough to let the mansion breathe.
