About the view

Gilded Age Cliff Mansion Newport

The view opens from above the coastline, looking along a jagged Atlantic edge where dark, wave-worn rocks give way to sweeping emerald lawn. A grand multi-story mansion anchors the upper left of the scene, its warm pale facade catching the low golden light of either early morning or late afternoon — the sky above it dissolving from soft peach at the horizon into a clear, cool blue. A pale path curves gently across the grass toward the house, and dense, dark-green shrubs cling to the cliff face below, softening the drop to the sea. The water to the right shifts from deep slate at the edges to a shimmering silver where the light catches the surface. The composition draws the eye from crashing foam at the foreground rocks all the way back along the coast to where other grand rooftops disappear into the tree line.

The history & when to go

The Breakers, the most celebrated of Newport's Gilded Age estates, was built for Cornelius Vanderbilt II and completed in 1895. It was designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt and served as the Vanderbilt family's summer residence. The Preservation Society of Newport County has operated it as a historic house museum for decades, and it remains one of the most visited historic properties in the United States.

Late summer evenings offer the warmest light along this stretch of coast, when the sun drops low enough to gild both the mansion's facade and the Atlantic in a single long sweep.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Newport finds a home on your wall.
