About the view

Gateway of India Waterfront

The Gateway of India commands the center of the scene, its great central arch framing a long stretch of open harbor beyond. The view is taken head-on from the broad waterfront esplanade, where warm amber and ochre tones of the monument's carved stone rise against an electric midday blue sky in Mumbai. Afternoon light falls hard and flat, casting crisp shadows across the paved plaza below. Clusters of figures drift across the foreground — some in vivid saffron and magenta, others gathered near a scatter of colorful market stalls to the right — giving the composition a lively, almost festive weight. Flanking turrets and ornate latticed screens catch the sun on either side of the arch, and through that great opening, the Arabian Sea glimmers in pale aquamarine.

The history & when to go

Completed in 1924, the Gateway of India was built to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to the city in 1911. It became one of the most significant departure points in modern Indian history when, in 1948, the last British troops to leave the country passed through it. Today it remains the symbolic front door of Mumbai, anchoring the waterfront at Apollo Bunder and drawing locals and travelers alike to its broad surrounding esplanade.

The scene is at its most vivid in the late morning, when the sun is high, the harbor shines, and the plaza fills with the unhurried bustle that defines this stretch of the waterfront.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Mumbai finds a home on your wall.
