About the view

Montevideo Art Deco Tower

The view looks straight up from plaza level, the Palacio Salvo rising against a deep cobalt sky streaked with wispy white clouds. Tall palms frame both sides of the composition, their golden fronds catching what feels like late-afternoon warmth — the same amber glow that washes across the tower's warm stone facade. The building steps upward in tiers, each setback more ornate than the last, until the crowned dome pins the whole scene to the sky. The canvas holds the color beautifully: honey and ochre below, cooling to cream near the summit, the blue above almost electric.

The history & when to go

The Palacio Salvo in Montevideo was completed in 1928 and stood for a time as the tallest building in South America. Designed by the Italian architect Mario Palanti, who also built its near-twin in Buenos Aires, the tower is an exuberant mix of Art Deco and earlier European styles, its upper floors decorated with elaborate sculptural detail. It has served various purposes over the decades and remains one of the most recognized structures in Uruguay, a symbol of the country's early twentieth-century confidence and cosmopolitan ambition.

Golden hour, when the low sun turns the facade the color of warm honey and the palms glow against the deepening sky, is the moment this view truly comes alive.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Montevideo finds a home on your wall.
