About the view

Red-Eyed Tree Frog

A broad, glistening leaf fills the frame, angled diagonally so its ribbed surface leads the eye straight to the frog perched at center. The body is an electric, almost impossible green, every tiny bump catching the diffuse forest light. Those eyes — wide, crimson, rimmed with dark pupils — hold the gaze completely. Vivid orange toes grip the leaf's slick edge, and along the frog's side a flash of blue and gold breaks the green like a hidden secret suddenly revealed. The background dissolves into deep shadow, pulling all that saturated color forward so the creature seems close enough to touch. The composition is intimate, still, and charged with quiet intensity.

The history & when to go

The red-eyed tree frog is one of the most recognized animals in the tropical Americas, found across the rainforests of Central America and into northern South America. Despite its startling colors, it is not venomous; researchers believe the vivid red eyes serve as a defense mechanism called startle coloration, momentarily stunning a predator and buying precious seconds to escape. The frog is nocturnal, spending its days resting on the undersides of broad leaves before coming alive after dark to hunt and call through the forest.

Visitors to Monteverde's cloud forest reserves are most likely to spot one on a guided night walk, when torchlight catches those brilliant eyes glowing against the green.

Behind the Passport

Explore the world, one canvas at a time.

Hi, I'm Nathan. I grew up in Ohio dreaming about the places on the map I hadn't seen yet, so I started The Painted Passport to turn real photos of those places into watercolor canvas prints. There are 570+ destinations so far, with new ones added every week.

I hope a little piece of Monteverde finds a home on your wall.
